For 45 years, we have been supporting those who live and work in extreme conditions, often in isolated locations. We have developed service solutions for remote sites to meet your staff’s needs for comfort, safety and well being at each stage of your project.
In line with its Better Tomorrow Plan commitments, Sodexo Remote Sites has a specific approach to local community development.
Sodexo works in partnership with local institutions and NGOs to hire and train local personnel and ensure compliance with its procurement policies. Together we examine the impact of our initiatives in favor of local development in an effort to forge close ties with communities in our host countries and foster their growth.
Recently awarded the Indigenous Engagement Award in Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore Supplier Recognition Program and reaffirming its commitment to Indigenous Australia through the launch of its 2nd Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), Sodexo Australia is serious about leaving a legacy that lasts long after a project ends.
Applying Aboriginal engagement protocols to recruiting across diverse communities, Sodexo has improved the national recruitment processes and the Indigenous workforce has grown from 40 in 2009 to 180 in 2011 with employees at various levels of the organisation. New leaders have emerged who share their skills and act as role models for their communities, thus making a self-sustaining contribution to the future.
In Peru, Sodexo designed a plan for its mining client Xstrata to contribute to local economic development in the Cotabambas province including training local community members to acquire professional skills in the hospitality industry and helping local producers improve their quality standards.
Operating a mine, an oil rig or a hydropower station has definite impacts on local ecosystems. The problem is compounded when thousands of men and women arrive to work in an uninhabited area.
Based on our experience in remote site management, Sodexo is committed to fostering environmentally responsible behavior. For example, we operate complex waste management systems and teach our own teams about the importance of environmental protection.
In Australia, the monthly newsletter “Eco-Village” collects and disseminates best practices among Sodexo employees. In addition, most of our operations in the country are certified to ISO 14001 standards.
In Algeria, Sodexo oversees waste management for SonaHess, an American-Algerian oil group, working to maximize productivity and improve the Quality of Daily Life on our clients’ sites. Providing food, laundry and housekeeping services gave us a clear understanding of site needs and positioned us to introduce a customized process in support of SonaHess’ ongoing waste management efforts.
As a partner to the Rio Tinto Mining Group in Madagascar, Sodexo has developed a number of initiatives to foster the economic and social development of the local community in Fort Dauphin, where the Group manages six remote sites. In 2009, more than 1,200 farmers were trained in truck farming techniques. Today, they provide Sodexo with more than 2.2 tons of vegetables and 5 tons of fruit each month.
