As military personnel become increasingly professionalized, armed forces are focusing on their core activity and calling upon experienced partners to provide logistical support for combat missions abroad and day-to-day management during training periods at home.

Managing during periods of absence

When parents are at work, they need to know that the organization of their children’s daily life is in good hands. For soldiers, this is a crucial need as they may be required to work outside normal daytime hours or leave on long tours of combat duty. LINK provide a turnkey solution and considerable financial aid for parents who depend on childcare provision.

In the United Kingdom, we distribute childcare vouchers to active duty soldiers and their families as well as reservists. In accordance with Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, the vouchers enable them to save more than 1,000 pounds each year through tax credits and reduced social contributions.

Supporting retraining

A military career today is shorter than a civilian career. At the end of their service commitment, veterans form a pool of highly skilled, efficient workers, ready to continue their professional lives in the civilian world.

Preparing for a second career

Supporting the retraining of volunteer soldiers at the end of their contracts is  becoming a priority for armies. To help personnel prepare for a second career, Sodexo teams develop partnerships and negotiate agreements to facilitate their return to civilian occupations.

In France, the Minister of Defense and Sodexo signed a retraining agreement to assist the professional reclassification of military forces and the employment of their spouses by offering jobs within the Group.

In the United States, the Sodexo employee network known as “Honor”, set up in 2009, facilitates career planning and retraining of veterans, reservists and members of the National Guard and their families.

In the United Kingdom, the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) has been put into place to provide each individual departing  after more than four years of service with consulting advice, workshops and help with CV writing, job searches and interviews.
Also in the United Kingdom, the Recovery Placement Process (RPP) finds placements for injured or recovering military personnel to help them along the road of recovery. Each individual spends six months with a company to gain experience while awaiting the Minister of Defense’s decision on retention or non-retention.

The Hub concept

Relaxing moments are indispensable to reduce stress and recharge batteries. To enjoy their off duty hours, soldiers need a pleasant, welcoming environment conducive to socializing.

Encouraging access to leisure

The pace of military life can be demanding and stressful - all the more reason to design areas specifically for relaxation. To meet this need, Sodexo created the Hub concept consisting of a 3-in-1 offer: eating and drinking, shopping and leisure activities.

The Hub is a meeting place for soldiers where they can have a meal at the café-bar, sit and talk over coffee, access the Internet, watch television, play computer and pub games and engage in sports. Soldiers can also take care of everyday needs such as withdrawing cash from an ATM, developing photos or purchasing essentials.

Nutritional programs

In barracks or theaters of operation, Sodexo’s logistical capabilities ensure that our cooks are always working under optimum conditions to serve well-balanced, high-energy meals.

Suitable calorie intake

Soldiers in the same battalion do not all perform the same kind of work. Some are very mobile and engage in strenuous physical effort, while others do jobs in offices. As a result, people’s calorie requirements may vary widely within the same organization. Aware of the problem of excess weight, our dietitians take the daily activity of each category of personnel into account to propose meals that meet their actual nutritional needs.

In the United States, Mess Hall 590 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina received the United States Marine Corps Hill Award for the quality of its foodservices managed by Sodexo.

In Afghanistan, Sodexo has been serving 150,000 meals each month to NATO forces since 2003. Every day at the Tora FOB (forward operational base), located above the village of Surobi, we provide 1,200 meals a day using plug & play-type 40 foot high cube containers while our water purification stations deliver 10,000 liters of drinking water.

In Sweden, Sodexo was selected to manage 21 armed forces restaurants serving 7,500 military personnel and 1,500 civilians on a daily basis. The satisfaction rate continues to climb and our client has achieved a 10% cost savings.

Retail management

In the United Kingdom, Sodexo Defense Services have integrated 18 Londis retail shops within their contracts. Similarly there are a number of Ermes retail shops in Cyprus SBA. In the United States, Sodexo Government Services have integrated some 7 Starbuck stores within the U.S. Marines Corp contract.
