Supply Chain code of conduct

We will ensure compliance with a Global Sustainable Supply Chain Code of Conduct in all the countries where we operate by 2015. Engaging the Supply Chain is seen as a major step towards a sustainable production system. Supplier Standards signed by suppliers help companies ensure that satisfactory labor and environmental conditions are applied in service provision. Verification by the company itself or by independent third parties ensures the enforcement of the Standards by the supplier.

Main changes: request to suppliers to inform Sodexo about their progress in respect to the improvement plans that they may have regarding the Code of Conduct, new references to Human Rights (Fundamental Rights at Work) and Business Integrity (Unfair Competition and Corruption).

ISO certifications

FRANCE - Many major suppliers are ISO 14001-certified, while others have signed environmental charters. Our procurement department in France has been certified to ISO 9002 standards since 1995 and achieved ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2001. In 2008, Sodexo conducted a survey of 150 suppliers with an 82% response rate to identify which suppliers are the leaders in sustainable development. The suppliers received a report of their performance and a benchmark compared to other suppliers.

Local, seasonal or sustainably grown or raised products

We will source local, seasonal or sustainably grown or raised products in all the countries where we operate by 2015. Through this commitment, we confirm our wish to contribute to sustainable agriculture, based on the preservation of natural resources and biodiversity, as well as respect for social justice and economic viability.

 

Red tractorUNITED-KINGDOM – Sodexo is the first food services company to promote “Red Tractor” certification for produce grown or raised in the UK, providing assurance of governance and traceability from farm to fork. This assurance scheme symbolizes high levels of food safety and ensures that only EU-approved agrochemicals and fertilizers are used. Red Tractor-approved milk, cream, fruits, vegetables and meat are included in Sodexo catalogues.

Sustainable fish and seafood

We will source sustainable fish and seafood in all the countries where we operate by 2015. In the last 30 years, the consumption of fish and seafood has tripled. Overfishing could result in the extinction of certain species. It is estimated that 75% of fish reserves in operation today are overfished.

 

In several countries, we work with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) on our sourcing and in some cases for the certification of our sites. In the Netherlands, Sodexo was the first foodservices company to obtain the MSC ecolabel and certification in April 2009. In the UK, Sodexo is the leading contract caterer for MSC-certified sites, with 1,000 sites certified by late 2010 and it plans to roll out this program across the business. Sodexo serves 123 tons of wild MSC fish per year and was the first foodservice company to achieve MSC certification at all of its sites in 2009.

Sustainable equipment and supplies

We will source sustainable equipment and supplies in all the countries where we operate by 2020. This process applies to cleaning products, disposables, office equipment and supplies as well as technical maintenance products.

 

Peru - Since 2008, Sodexo has replaced all plastic bags with biodegradable bags, particularly those used in laundry services. A total of 340,000 plastic bags are replaced in this way each month. The initiative is currently being extended to 5 sites across the country. Since 2009, Sodexo has replaced all plastic cups at Remote Sites with biodegradable cups, where the initiative is under way at 25 remote sites around the country. In 2010, 2,800,000 plastic cups were replaced by biodegradable cups.
